 Winter in the Piet Oudolf Garden, Hauser and Wirth Gallery, Somerset, by Jason Ingram, our 2023 Photography Competition Judge Our theme for 2023 is ‘Let Nature Thrive’. Across the world we’ve seen many challenges faced by plants and nature in the light of extreme weather and global environmental challenges. Jason Ingram, our judge, is an award-winning photographer. For the last three years (2019-2021) he has won the prestigious Gordon Rae Photographer of the Year Award from the Garden Media Guild. As judge, he’s looking forward to some creative interpretations of the ‘Let Nature Thrive’ theme: “Nature surrounds us all in some shape and form every day so this brief is as wide as you can interpret it. When you really start to look you see elements of nature thriving the moment you walk out of the door. Whether you live in a city, town or the countryside, we are surrounded by it.” Tips on your photography technique from Jason “When you start to shoot for this keep the brief in the back of your mind but do not allow it to take over from what drives your creativity. Although I will be looking for how you tackle the subject matter, I will also be looking at your composition and use of light. I find when I am shooting for a commission I tend to be pushed in the direction of how the light is working for the subject matter as I know that this will help create my image.
